Gaspard Yurkievich: Shake What Your Momma Gave YA
Gaspard Yurkievich was born in Paris in 1972. After his studies at Studio Berçot, he won the Festival de la Mode in Hyères in 1997 and launched his first prêt-à-porter women’s collection in 1998. He has always let his women’s line speak for it’s self, which illustrates his sexy, contemporary and urban style down the Paris runway. Gaspard launched the men’s prêt-à-porter and shoe collections in 2003. This was followed in 2005 by an accessories line and the opening of his first boutique, located in Paris.
Today’s Paris Men show entitled Alpha Love S/S 2009 was a clear look at his vision innovative and on the edge. He was able to look into the future. The audience at first was wondering what the clicking sound was at the beginning of the show, as a Greek style chorus entered the room, clicking and clacking, then singing, “shake what your momma gave you! This was innovation for you. Dani Siciliano played with the concept of the “chorus” in archetypal Greek tragedies re-mixed it with a score influenced by The “D” (Detroit) “Booty House” and her own compositions.
The look was very Tina Turner in Mad Max. The collection found its inspiration in the sartorial language of the 1920’s. Integrated and reinterpreting the masculine form of dress with the feminine wardrobe. The clothes were ready for the battlefield true in the search for modernity that characterizes the collection
Metal Head bands where put on the boys heads as they marched around the room. Wing tip shoes paired with shorts, tunics and parkas. The chosen materials refined and seemingly weightless nylon jackets, satin finished cotton gabardine, tweed jackets shorts whose polished surfaces reflect the light. He even introduced leggings (sort of) for men socks with no toes and a metalic cami jacket.
